Fight Work-Related Stress

2019 has well and truly begun and though 2018 might have brought some glorious moments of success, prosperity and growth to some of us, let’s not forget the other side of reality.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released its annual report on statistics for work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2017/18. The numbers are not encouraging, and this is our way of raising awareness and helping fight work-related stress, depression and anxiety.

The HSE defines work-related stress, depression or anxiety as “a harmful reaction people have to undue pressures and demands placed on them at work”, and workload pressure is identified as the main cause of this condition. The report states that 595,000 workers suffer from work-related stress, depression or anxiety, resulting in 15.4 million working days lost due to this cause.

Certain industries seem to be more ‘susceptible’ to stress with the HSE reporting that Education, Social Working and Administration have higher than average rates of stress, depression or anxiety.

Similar to industries, there are specific roles and positions with higher rates of stress, depression or anxiety. According to the HSE, Professionals have the highest average rate of stress, depression or anxiety with Skilled Trades and Machine Operatives being the lowest.

Conclusion

The HSE report concludes that work-related stress, depression or anxiety accounts for 44% of work-related ill health and 57% of working days lost in 2017/18. The fact that workload pressure is identified as the main cause of this condition is worrying indeed, but it has its silver lining too!
