Japanese Encephalitis

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection of the brain and spinal cord. In 30% of cases this infection is severe, and can result in death or permanent neurological problems. Japanese encephalitis is spread to humans from animals or birds by mosquitoes. The disease is rare, but travellers to China and South East Asia are advised to consider vaccination, especially if travelling during the rainy season when mosquitoes are more prevalent or if accommodation in rural areas is expected.

Prevent Japanese Encephalitis

This vaccine is administered as a course of two injections 28 days apart. The vaccine contains inactivated (not live) virus particles, and is given as an intramuscular injection. Ideally, the full course should be completed at least one month prior to departure. This gives sufficient time for your immune system to develop full resistance against the virus.

For adults who require long-term immunity a booster dose is recommended 12-24 months after the initial course. Due to lack of any study data, booster vaccination is only recommended for adults aged 18 years and over. Children aged 2 months and over are able to receive the vaccine; below 2 years the doses given are half the dose usually used for older children and adults.
